The family told me a story about their upbringing here that I just love and wish to retell. The father of the house was a merchant seaman and would go away to sea for months at a time. On his return to Perth, Mum and the kids would climb the sand dune opposite and watch the ship enter Gage Roads. Dad, the engineer of the ship would blow the fog horn or let out a billow of smoke and wave to the kids. As soon as they had seen and waved they would get in the car to Fremantle Port and all arrive at roughly the same time for the family to re-unite!

When they moved from Scotland and bought a home in Perth in the early 1960’s they didn’t know the difference between South City Beach or Malaga! With the benefit of hindsight their choice was a happy accident and has been good to them, as the story above illustrates!
